September 28 – Racing for HoPE 2014

My racing season took a detour for a few months after the closing of Baer Field Speedway in early July. Today, I’m racing at my favorite race track, Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis.

Racing for HoPE with me today is Ryland Jesse, the 10 year-old son of Nick and Summer Jesse from South Dakota. As I’m driving around the track this afternoon, Ryland and his family will be in a vehicle en route to Dallas, Texas where I’ll be meeting up with them on Wednesday for the 2014 Family Conference on Holoprosencephaly.

Ryland has a co-rider with us today, and that’s Ryland oldest brother, Nathan Vickers. Nathan is a racer at heart, but he has suspended his racing dreams for a while as he serves our country in the US Army. Like me, Nathan used his race car to help bring awareness to Holoprosencephaly.

You will be hearing more about it in the coming week, but I’m so excited to have the opportunity to attend the conference in Dallas. I joined the board of directors of Families for HoPE in 2012, and my primary role at the conference is to coordinate and oversee the activities for the siblings ages 12 and up. Kids like Nathan who grow up surrounded by HoPE.

But for now, it’s race day, and we’re going for it! Hang on tight boys–checkers or wreckers!
